And it has lived up to the hype!
The first question everyone asks is “How long did you wait in line?” Well the answer is 0. I waltzed in to the Bellevue Apple Store around 9:00pm the day they came out to no line. There were hundreds left and no one in line.
What I like:
1. My favorite part is the iPod. It is by far the best one I’ve ever owned (1G, 4G, Nano)
2. The web browser is fantastic
3. Contacts, Calendars and Mail are excellent and sync flawlessly with the mac
4. iChat (SMS) is pretty cool
5. The Google map client is awesome
6. Weather, stocks, YouTube are icing on the cake
What could be improved:
1. API. Obviously I want to write apps for it so pleeeeease Apple let the dogs eat
2. File Manager and USB mode. You can’t move files on to it and use it for storage (supposedly this is in the first update). This is tied to the gripes about being too tied to iTunes
3. EDGE sucks. The AT&T network is too slow
4. Can’t update podcasts over the net. You have to sync it with iTunes
5. No pictures in E-Mail

You forgot the most egregious of all the “what could be improved”s. That the “best iPod we’ve ever built” doesn’t work with most headphones is an insane decision, and one that isn’t going to be fixed in a software update like most of the rest of your list. The ones supplied are terrible (at least for my wife and me, whose ears just won’t hold the earbuds in). I love this thing as a phone, and for the set of things I care about it’s the best phone by far I’ve ever owned. The internet device is nice to have as well, and Google Maps got me out of downtown St. Louis without a hitch a few days ago when I had to find an alternate way home. But as an iPod it’s essentially worthless to me for portable use.
Don’t talk to me about the headphone adapter that Apple sells from Belkin, either. It’s the stupidiest designed product that Apple has on it’s entire store site, I’m certain. Don’t even think about using it. Wait until the adapter comes from Griffin - which is effectively a short cable extension.
And yes, I know that some headphones supposedly do work, although none of the four or five I own do. I also know that Bose QuietComfort2’s can apparently safely be modified to be used - and I’ve done that. It’s the indefensibility (and especially Apple’s indefense) of the decision that infuriates me.
I wish I didn’t like the iPhone so much so I could throw the iPod through a window. At Apple headquarters.

Yep, you’re right. That is by far the worst. I guess that bugged me so much I was blocking it out! None of my 3 sets of headphone adapters worked either. Until I took a knife to the car adapter cable.
